Scar'dFace Wood Flooring

Scar'dFace is our most popular flooring grade; in short the grade shows off some of the signs of previous use but the charateristics of wood itself are more prominent; here are some of the character you will see in this grade:

remnants of saw marks: our Tobacco Oak is milled from barn siding boards with these saw marks; we mill it to show the marks but not have a lot of texture; you may see remnant of saw marks in Chestnut, Beech, BlankPlank, and Mushroom Cypress

Insect tracks: some of the wood, especially wood which comes from barns, has some tracks left behind from insects; sometimes these insect tracks move randomly along the grain and other time the track goes straight through the wood leaving just a hole on the surface; the insects are long gone, and we kiln-dry the wood at high enough temperatures that stragglers will be eliminated; woods which show off critter tracks are Tobacco Oak, Chestnut, Beech. Hickory and Trailblazer

weathering: some woods were weathered before coming to us and in the Scar'dFace grade most of the weathering will have been removed leaving mostly shadows of the original patina; woods which may have patina from weathering are Tobacco Oak, Chestnut, Beech, Trailblazer and BarnPlank

holes: wood is often attached with bolts or nails and the ferrous bleeding from these fasteners creates an attractive stain accenting the holes; woods which may feature holes are Tobacco Oak, Greenheart, Southern Yellow Pine and BarnPlank

color: woods exposed to water or brine over a long period of time tend to change color usually creating dark streaks, but sometimes changing the color of the entire board; woods featuring significant color variations are Trestlewood II, Fir VatBase and Fir Picklewood; another wood with significant color is Warehouse Maple which gains its color from dirt & debris carried deep into the wood by light oil
